Life can get busy. Between work, family, friends, and everything else on your plate, it’s no wonder so many of us feel stressed. That’s why April - Stress Awareness Month - is a useful reminder to slow down and check in with ourselves.

So, what’s Stress Awareness Month all about? In a nutshell, it aims to raise awareness about stress - what causes it, how it affects us, and most importantly, what we can do about it. Stress is a normal part of life, but when it builds up or becomes overwhelming, it can take a toll on our health and general wellbeing.

How does stress show up? It looks different for everyone, but some common signs include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed or on edge

  • Snapping at people over small things

  • Struggling to sleep or constantly feeling tired

  • Getting more headaches or body aches than usual

  • Losing interest in things you normally enjoy

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

A Few Simple Ways to Tackle Stress:

  • Take a breather. Literally. Deep, slow belly breaths can calm your nervous system. Breathe in to the count of four, breathe out to the count of six.

  • Move your body. Walk, dance, stretch—whatever feels good!

  • Talk to someone you trust. Sometimes just saying things out loud makes a world of difference.

  • Protect your time. You’re allowed to say no to things that drain your energy.

  • Make space for the things that recharge you. Whether it’s a hobby, a nap, a film or a good playlist, find out what works for you.

You Don’t Have to Handle It Alone. Stress is part of life, but struggling with it doesn’t have to be. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, talking to a counsellor can help you find clarity, coping tools, and real support.
